Abstract:
Dust mite allergy is very common in Hong Kong, and it contributes significantly to atopic conditions including asthma, allergic rhinitis, chronic urticaria and eczema. Recent international guidelines for asthma and allergic rhinitis advocated the use of allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) when the conventional first line therapies such as topical steroids and antihistamines could not provide adequate symptom control. Evidence also showed that AIT could achieve long term improvement in terms of symptoms and medication use.
The Allergy Clinic of the Department Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Queen Mary Hospital has started the dust mite sublingual immunotherapy programme three years ago, managing children and adolescents with persistent and severe allergic rhinitis, poorly controlled asthma and, in selected cases, eczema due to dust mite allergy. In this webinar, I will be sharing our experience in patient selection, preparation, counselling and management of adverse effects in the journey of dust mite immunotherapies for children in a public hospital setting.
