Specialist in allergy, Molecular Allergology forerunner
His specialist graduated in Medicine at the Rome University "Sapienza" in 1980, got the specialty in Allergology in 1983. He added to his clinical training the activity as researcher in the laboratory, with a long lasting collaboration with the Laboratory of Immunology at the Italian National Institute of Health (1984-2000) where he learned all the biochemical an immunochemical techniques, and the development of murine models. Among other activities, he acquired the basics of programming on personal computers, creating the first database of low molecular weight compounds causing allergies (i.e. drug, hapten, occupational allergens). At the end of the eighties, in the pre-Internet era he produced a report for the Council of Europe, funding the project, including 1,500 compounds and their chemical, immunological and clinical features. Since the early nineties he resumed his clinical allergology practice as allergist working in local settings of the Italian National Healthcare System. In the second half of the nineties he brought together all his expertise, clinical, laboratory and information technology, in the great project of Molecular Allergology leading to the identification of many allergenic molecules, to the development of microarrays as the main tool for investigations in allergy diagnostics, the creation of the Allergome web platform, the development of its external modules, the electronic record InterAll, the AllergomeConsumer project, and the initial development of Apps for mobile devices, and for their integrated use in the clinic and in research.
Dr. Mari is the author and co-author of 154 scientific papers, 43 of them in collaboration with other CAAM members. He is a member of the Subcommittee for the Standardization and Quality Assessment of Immunological Diagnostics of the International Union of Immunological Societies. He has been the creator of the first Center for Molecular Allergology and is co-founder of the CAAM, which helps with organizational activities, coordination and developments. Currently, he has unanimously been appointed by the other Associates Founder, Director and Representative of the CAAM. Together with the other CAAM specialists he contributes to the design and release of the second generation molecule-based test for allergy diagnosis, the FABER IgE test and of the original dynamic visualization system of the test results, the CDRS.
